Medical Examiner Rules 1985 Shooting Victim’s Death a Homicide

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit has recently learned the 2012 death of a woman who was shot more than 30 years ago has now been ruled a homicide.

On November 1, 1985, at approximately 3:45 a.m., Prince George’s County Police were dispatched to 11721 South Laurel Drive, #412A, Laurel, Maryland for a reported shooting. The victim, Pamela Prowant, was found on the bedroom floor of her apartment suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Ms. Prowant was transported to Prince George’s Hospital Center for treatment. Ms. Prowant suffered paralysis and was confined to a wheelchair for the remainder of her life.

On January 29, 2012, Ms. Prowant died at a local hospital. On April 3, 2012, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled Ms. Prowant’s death a homicide resulting from the gunshot wound she received in 1985.

After consultation with the State’s Attorney’s Office, it was determined that in 1985 the law required that a victim die within one year and one day for the suspect to be charged with murder. Based on this information, this case is no longer prosecutable.
