Fallen Heroes - Officer Robert E. Yeszerski

Let us pause to remember our Fallen Heroes from the Town of Seat Pleasant Police Department, Officer William R. Clements, and the Prince George’s County Police Department, Officer Robert E. Yeszerski, lost this day in 1968 while attempting to impound an abandoned vehicle in George Sector.

On the morning of November 30, 1968, members of the Town of Seat Pleasant Police Department contacted a resident of the 7000 Block of Grieg Court in Seat Pleasant, Maryland, regarding his inoperable vehicle being illegally parked in front of his residence. The owner was ordered to remove the vehicle at which time he made verbal threats to kill any police officer who took enforcement action with respect to his vehicle. Later that day, Ofc. Clements responded back to the location of incident to impound the vehicle because the owner failed to comply with the earlier directive. Ofc. Yeszerski responded to assist based on the previous threats. Upon the arrival of the officers, the vehicle owner suddenly emerged from his residence, approached the officers from behind, and produced a handgun. He then opened fire, fatally wounding Ofc. Clements and Ofc. Yeszerski.

Ofc. Clements served the Town of Seat Pleasant Police Department for four years and was the first member of that agency to make the Ultimate Sacrifice.

Ofc. Yeszerski joined the Prince George’s County Police Department on November 6, 1967, as a member of Session 3-67, a class that would ultimately lose three of its members in the Line of Duty. He served this Agency for one year and was the sixth member thereof to make the Ultimate Sacrifice.

Ofc. Clements and Ofc. Yeszerski were the seventh and eighth law enforcement officers to give their lives in service to this Profession within Prince George’s County, Maryland.

At the time of his death, Officer William R. Clements was 24 years old and survived by his wife and young daughter.

At the time of his death, Officer Robert E. Yeszerski was 23 years old and survived by his expectant wife and two young children.

Police Nab Stolen Vehicle Suspects

                                      Darall Green

Prince George’s County Maryland… The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Washington Area Vehicle Enforcement (W.A.V.E.) Unit executed five arrest warrants and two search warrants today in connection with the investigation of over 20 stolen vehicles in Prince George’s County.

Investigators identified the suspects after each brought stolen cars, taken from numerous locations throughout the County, to various scrap yards in the metropolitan area to be crushed and sold. Each of the suspects is responsible for stealing the vehicles, passing them off as abandoned, and then selling them for scrap for as much as $400 per car. The suspects primarily targeted older vehicles, since scrap yards are not required to check for salvage titles on vehicles that are more than eight years old.

Arrested today were Paul Butler, 45, of the 9200 block of Lottsford Road, Upper Marlboro, charged with 11 counts of Auto Theft; Michael Lindsey, of the 550 block of Karen Elaine Drive, New Carrolton, charged with 9 counts of Auto Theft; Dante Tapp, 29, of the 1800 block of 16th Avenue, Cheverly, charged with 1 count of Auto Theft; James Barber, 33, of the 400 block of Southerland Court, Upper Marlboro, charged with 1 count of Auto Theft; and Lori Cook, 31, of the 7800 block of Delano Road, Upper Marlboro, charged with 1 count of Auto Theft.

The execution of the two search warrants resulted in the seizure of two tow trucks and several other items of evidentiary value.

A sixth suspect, 44 year-old Darall Green (pictured), is also wanted on 11 counts of Auto Theft for allegedly stealing numerous vehicles, that were left abandoned on the Capital Beltway, to be sold for scrap.

"This is theft for profit that really affects the working class,” said Sergeant Fred Walford. “Most of these cars are older, and when they get stolen, the insurance doesn’t cover much. It leaves working mothers and fathers with no car, and no money to buy a new one. This hurts everybody.”

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Prince George’s County Police Department’s W.A.V.E. Unit at (301) 454-8250. Callers wishing to remain anonymous may call Crime Solvers at 1-866-411 TIPS (8477), text “PGPD plus your message” to CRIMES (274637) on your cell phone, or go to http://www.princegeorgescountymd.gov/police/ to submit a tip online.

Suitland Man Sentenced to 18 Years in Prison

SUITLAND MAN EXILED TO 18 YEARS IN PRISON ON FEDERAL GUN AND DRUG
CHARGES FROM MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA
Assaulted Police Officer and Pointed Loaded Gun

Greenbelt, Maryland - Chief U.S. District Judge Deborah K. Chasanow sentenced James
Orlando Johnson, a/k/a “James Armond Johnson,” “James Armand Johnson,” and “James Omar
Johnson,” age 29, of Suitland, Maryland, today to 18 years in prison, followed by five years of
supervised release, for two counts of possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine; using,
carrying and brandishing a firearm during and in relation to a drug trafficking crime; and possession
of a firearm by a felon.

The sentence was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J.
Rosenstein; the United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia Timothy J. Heaphy;
Special Agent in Charge Mark R. Chait of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives
- Baltimore Field Division; Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Angela D. Alsobrooks;
Winchester, Virginia Commonwealth Attorney Alexander R. Iden; Winchester Police Chief Kevin
Sanzenbacher; and Chief Mark A. Magaw of the Prince George’s County Police Department.

“Today’s sentencing demonstrates how serious and determined ATF and our law
enforcement partners are in bringing violent criminals to justice,” says ATF Special Agent in Charge
Mark R. Chait. “We are grateful that the officer was not injured as a result of this criminal’s conduct,
and the details surrounding these investigations clearly demonstrate that we are targeting violent
repeat offenders.”

According to Johnson’s plea agreement, on July 20, 2006, in Suitland, Maryland, two officers
of the Prince George’s County Police Department saw Johnson and the driver of a gray van engaging
in what they believed to be a drug transaction, with the driver handing Johnson cash. As the officers
approached, Johnson placed the plastic bag that he had been holding into his pants pocket and
walked away while reaching for a firearm in his waistband. When one officer informed Johnson that
he was going to pat him down for weapons, Johnson elbowed the officer in the chest and ran away.
During the ensuing foot chase Johnson pointed a .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol at the pursuing
officer. The officer drew his own firearm, and Johnson threw his gun away and continued running.
Johnson was subsequently arrested and his gun was recovered with the safety in the “off” position,
loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition in the magazine and one round in the chamber. Johnson was
searched and law enforcement recovered: a second magazine for Johnson’s firearm, also loaded
with 15 rounds of ammunition; a plastic bag containing 5.06 grams of crack cocaine; another
plastic bag containing approximately one gram of marijuana; and over $800 cash.

On August 3, 2010, while on pretrial release from the February 2009 federal indictment
for gun and drug violations related to the above conduct, Johnson was pulled over by police in
Winchester, Virginia. Johnson was found in possession of: a .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol,
loaded with eight rounds of ammunition; a box containing 16 rounds of ammunition; a plastic
bag containing 17.097 grams of crack cocaine; and a digital scale. Johnson subsequently signed
an affidavit admitting that the crack cocaine and the firearm belonged to him.

United States Attorneys Rod J. Rosenstein and Timothy J. Heaphy commended the ATF,
Prince George’s County Police Department, Winchester Police Department; Prince George’s
County State’s Attorney’s Office; and the Winchester County Virginia Commonwealth
Attorney’s Office for their work in this investigation and prosecution. U.S. Attorneys
Rosenstein and Heaphy thanked Assistant United States Attorney Robert K. Hur of the District of
Maryland and Assistant United States Attorney Grayson Hoffman and Special Assistant U.S.
Attorney Jason Caccamo of the Western District of Virginia, who prosecuted the case.

Recovered Gold & Jewelry

Prince George’s County police struck gold Wednesday after they broke up an illegal jewelry operation and recovered more than $100,000 in gold and jewelry.

The police’s Special Enforcement Division took a Mexican national into custody and discovered a cache of gold and jewelry inside his home.
Police said the suspect has been operating an illegal jewelry kiosk inside a grocery store, where he’d receive stolen jewelry and gold.
After receiving it, the suspect would take it to his home and would melt it down to make it harder for authorities to trace it, police said. The suspect was also illegally operating a store out of his home.
The suspect is facing charges of receiving stolen property and operating a store without a license, among other charges.
Authorities said that as the price of gold has increased, a criminal element has taking advantage of the rise and become involved in the illegal gold trade.

Police Encounter More Than Expected in Unusual Raid

Prince George’s County police raiding a Riverdale, Md., home in an illegal gold investigation first found some unexpected surprises.
Before entering the home, they had to corral two roosters in the backyard.
Once the birds were in custody, they entered the house and found it was like a 7-Eleven -- real grocery store shelves holding real grocery store items.
Beyond the store, police struck gold. It looked like a jewelry store complete with bracelets, rings, necklaces and pendants.
“We were actually able to go in and do a sting operation and determine that they were taking in stolen jewelry,” Prince George's County police Sgt. Laurie Hall said.
A ring ran an unlicensed jewelry stand in a Riverdale grocery store, police said. The ring would buy stolen jewelry, reconfigure it and sell in New York for a big profit.
“They’re making a lot of money on it,” Hall said. “The price of gold is extremely high. In our county alone we have a lot of break-ins and thefts that involve gold jewelry.”
Police are comparing seized jewelry to items stolen in recent burglaries to see if they can close some of those cases.
Only those roosters are in custody, but arrests in the gold scheme are forthcoming, police said.
